Memdeklaro - A humanitarian open source alternative to centralized ID

The Esperanto self-declaration of identity (Memdeklaro de identeco) is a humanitarian open source alternative to government ID, similar to Fridtjof Nansen’s stateless passports in the 1920s or Garry Davis’s world citizen passports.

Millions of people worldwide have no access to government ID, which makes it difficult to access necessities like work, housing and healthcare. Despite issuing laissez-passer passports in the past, neither the UN nor the Red Cross offer substitute IDs today, and nation-states mostly refuse to issue stateless passports or certificates of identity.

This leaves individuals, who may be stateless, refugees, not registered at birth, victims of child abuse or victims of cult abuse, on the edge of society, with no way to appeal or earn access to what most people take for granted. In comparison, the self-declaration of identity does not require the permission of third parties such as birth countries, birth cultures or birth parents - instead, the individual has the ability to define their own name, culture and personal ties, and is the authority over their own life.

Memdeklaro supports a world where people are judged only on their character, beliefs and actions, not on where they were born, who they were born to, or what their birth culture was. A world where individuals have power over their own lives - the power to leave corrupt governments, hostile cultures and abusers, and thrive in a self-chosen community.
